As school leaders, one of the greatest challenges we face is to create and maintain a positive school culture that is focused on student learning, that is collegial, supportive, and dedicated to always finding ways to do EVEN BETTER while finding joy in the work.

To do this, everyone has to be part of the solution.  Culture is not determined by one person, by the administration, or by the teachers--it is set by every person in the organization.

Stephen R. Covey said, “Culture is not the mission, the vision or the strategy that is printed on a sheet of paper or mounted on a wall. Culture is not the list of school values or the school's policy manual. Culture is not what is proclaimed out of someone's mouth. Rather, culture is how people actually behave and treat each other on a consistent day-in and day-out basis. Culture can be seen, felt, and heard.   (http://www.theleaderinme.org/information/what-is-the-leader-in-me/school-culture/)

When I was a school principal, my staff and I worked together to truly embrace and embody the principles of the Fish Philosophy.  And it made a difference....

The book Fish! is a short, engaging read that expounds upon four basic principles for finding joy in your work and creating an exciting, fun workplace.  It started in the Pike's Place Market where the men "selling" fish became world famous for their engagement with customers.

The principles are simple and relate directly to what Covey notes about culture.  These principles apply to every person in a school--students, teachers, administrators, and classified staff.  They are easy to understand and remember and even easier to apply:

1)  Be there for each other
2)  Choose your attitude
3)  Make someone's day
4)  Play

Nothing complicated, nothing requiring more money....just some simple principles for how we want to continue on our journey as Douglas School District--AWESOME place to learn and work!!
